Making sure products are safe

The Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 provides a guarantee that goods supplied to a consumer be of acceptable quality, including that they be safe. Some products have mandatory safety requirements or regulations – others have voluntary standards.

How product safety guidance works

Not all product safety risks need regulation. There are different tools to improve safety, depending on the level of risk and what’s most effective.

Some guidance responds to a specific safety concern with a product, while other guidance helps businesses build strong product safety systems overall.

Understanding the difference

Product safety policy statements are used when there’s a known safety concern with a specific product. Product safety guidelines help businesses manage product safety across their products and processes more generally. Both are non mandatory and support compliance with product safety laws.
