The Hazard!
Tesla has identified certain lithium-ion battery cells from a third-party supplier in a subset of Powerwall 2 systems sold within the stated date range that may fail and overheat (the defect).
Tesla has received reports of Powerwall 2 units with the affected battery cell defect smoking or emitting flames.
What to do...
Tesla has notified impacted customers through the Tesla app. Customers should confirm their Powerwall 2 system is online and check for a notification.
Tesla has proactively discharged all affected units in New Zealand, and locked them out, to mitigate overheating risk in the interim.
Tesla considers these discharged units do not pose a fire or overheating risk.
Tesla will be replacing affected units at no cost. Tesla or a third-party service provider will contact customers with affected units to schedule replacement.
