The Hazard!

This may cause a risk to health, Tremolite (a naturally occurring asbestos in quartz) has been detected in some samples after laboratory testing. No trace (respirable) asbestos has been detected in any of the collected samples.

The presence of asbestos fibre bundles does not imply that there is a risk of asbestos exposure. Asbestos fibres are hazardous only if they are sufficiently fine, airborne and inhaled in sufficient quantity. The release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising.

While the risk that any asbestos found is likely to be airborne or fine enough for inhalation is low, this may still pose a risk.

Please note this is a voluntary recall undertaken by Educational Colours Pty Ltd and additional testing is currently being undertaken to determine the risk of the product in New Zealand.

What to do...

Immediate advice for consumers:

  • Stop using the product immediately.
  • Ensure the sand is in a sealed container. If you need advice on how to do this, please contact a licensed professional.
  • Do not dispose of the product in general waste. WorkSafe strongly recommends engaging a Class A licensed asbestos removalist for safe disposal. A list of licensed removalists can be found on the WorkSafe website.
  • Once secure, we encourage people to reach out to the supplier to organise a refund under the Consumer Guarantees Act.

Immediate advice for workplaces:

  • If the product is in a sealed container move it to a secure location away from people.
  • If the sand is currently being used in your workplace, please instruct everyone to leave the area, block it off and make sure it is not accessible. Do not vacuum or sweep floors where there is sand, or attempt to clean it up. Contact a licensed asbestos assessor or removalist for immediate advice and support on your specific situation. Details of Class A licensed removalists are available in the Asbestos Removal Licence Holders Register: Asbestos removal licence holders  · Online services. Do not return to the affected area until the extent of contamination is established, and after the area is remediated by an expert.
  • If individuals are currently using the sand, they should put it down and relocate to a sand-free, well-ventilated area.
  • If you are an educational facility and have identified that the sand has been used at your site, please notify the Ministry of Education.

Decontamination requirements:

  • Contact a licensed asbestos assessor or Class A licensed asbestos removalist who can provide decontamination services and assist with personal decontamination. Details of Class A licensed removalists are available in the Asbestos Removal Licence Holders Register: Asbestos removal licence holders  · Online services
  • All clothing worn during exposure must be disposed of as asbestos waste as part of personal decontamination.

Educational Colours is developing a recall form for affected customers to complete, please reach out to Educational Colours using their contact details below for next steps.
